Fish Passing

Given all the truly sad events of the weekend this may seem minor but over the weekend the fish tank chiller went down (I believe an electrical break occured because the computers all had the little novell message on them) and all the fish died. We will try to get a new bunch soon.

Fish Eggs

Fish eggs have arrived this morning - many have already hatched!

They are cute little orange squiggly things with black dots...

You can come by anytime to take a look but if you want to 'chat' about them I have 4th planning.

The rainbow trout will be with us for a few months.

TIC Tips

Last week we got all the TIC projects up and running with fish, but not without some hiccups. The chiller at Madison HS went down Friday morning so when I got there with fish the temp was in the 70s. Thanks to a savvy security guy who figured a fuse was blown he was able to get the chiller running again using a metal paper clip (only do this in an emergency until you can find a replacement fuse). This worked as a temporary fix while we got a replacement fuse (250 volt, 15 amp). So it would be a good idea to keep a few spares on hand just in case.

Kimberly also had a couple good tips. She keeps a couple 5 gal buckets with lids, filled with dechlorinated water on hand and replaces about 20% of the water in the tank each week. This also allows her to replace some tank volume during the week if ammonia concentrations start to rise. She also pointed out that having more than about 10-12 fish in the tank can really create ammonia problems, especially as the fish start to grow and put out more waste. So if you ended up with more fish than that be expecting ammonia problems.

When I left for spring break the tank was "sweating." I am fearful what my floor will look like in the morning. I have packed loads of bath towels in my car, just in case. I hope that I can get a bead of silicon applied around the tank soon and that it will help. We will see. I will let you know.

I will also get my contract signed and submitted tomorrow. I know this will make the TU officers happy.

DO should remain the same. Temp is controlled by chiller. DO is affected by temp more than chemicals.

Looking for old towels for MHS's TIC set-up

The chiller on our fish tank causes lots of condensation.

Fish should arrive after spring break - we will have for 6 weeks - you are welcome to come see them.
